Ali Abbas Rizvi: Stronger language before stronger action

It is crucial to work internationally in solving the crisis facing the world that needs a true leadership on global issues. The yearly climate change summits under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change are great opportunities to raise climate-related issues every year and discuss the accelerating global warming in order to shape strategies to deal and respond adequately to the needs of the planet.

The special report launched in South Korea by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in October this year while citing six thousand scientific references echoed the need to limit global warming to 1.5°C that could prevent some of the worst effects of climate change. And, this report is of utmost importance to most of the countries.

The objective of COP24 being held in Poland’s traditional mining city of Katowice is to reach consensus of all the parties on a set of directives in the light of the Paris Accord to combat climate change. After deadly wildfire in California, climate change should have gotten more attention worldwide, but the negotiators from Saudi Arabia and the United States have allied with their Russian and Kuwaiti counterparts in startling the world representatives at the summit by demurring to a statement ‘welcoming’ the 1.5°C IPCC report. The four fossil-fuel giants argued that it was sufficient for all the parties to merely ‘note’ the findings of this report with Saudi Arabia even threatening to block the discussion if any advancements made any further in order to adopt the change of word. It should also be noted that Saudi Aramco is the world’s largest profitable oil firm.

This raises one concern that if the report isn’t just ‘welcomed’ with a stronger language, how will the worldwide emissions be lowered with weaker actions to such an extent so that global warming is halted to 1.5°C by 2020.

As the first week of the conference has ended, attempts at the 24th Conference of Parties have failed to recognize and adopt the 1.5°C IPCC report till now. Climate scientist, Masson-Delmotte says, “A 1.5°C and a 2°C worlds are very different in terms of mean climate, extremes, sea level rise, and climate-related risks, with the emergence of climate change hotspots challenging basic water, food, economic security and the risk of irreversible loss of wildlife.” Now, the question is how much worst we are willing to let it get, and that will the real policies and law changes ever occur.

Climate change is definitely in the interests of no one and the short-term profits are more likely to cause such long-term damages that will probably leave no chances for the situation of the globe to get back to normal. Either industrial, political and ideological interests have to be compromised or the near-future of the globe. A stronger response to this global threat of warming will commence from stronger statements that will direct the world leadership towards carrying out many stronger actions simultaneously.

Politicians/political leaders, senators, ministers, bureaucrats, civil servants, diplomats, and all the policy makers who deny science at the cost of the most vulnerable today will be remembered in the history for their callous actions due to their shortsightedness and complete disregard for the human lives.

I also wonder how dramatic the effects need to be on our environment before people believe the science and take action. Irreversible effects are coming sooner rathe than later and policy needs to be put in place in order to slow the effects. there is going to be an increase in natural disasters and we have no idea how extreme the weather can get.

Climate change is starting to truly impact the United States and the rest of the world. I feel that nobody considers and takes notice to how serious and harming climate change truly is. I was always pretty involved and interested in climate change regarding that I hunt and fish where the weather and temperature play a big role. I feel as though people are never going to pay attention or are only going to realize it when its too late to climate change.

Climate change is not a high priority because solutions are expensive. However, people fail to notice that the cost of mitigation is significantly less than the cost of prevention. Until the effects of climate change become unavoidable and irreversible, it will be difficult to advocate for climate change funding. If more people are aware of the risks posed by avoiding climate changes, there would be more immediate action.

I don't think that people truly believe that 1.5°C and 2°C are extremely different and important when it comes to climate change. I don't understand what it is going to take for people to truly realize that climate change is a major environmental issue. Problems and disasters that we can't even imagine are going to happen if changes don't happen soon.

Climate change is really starting to impact the United States. I feel like no one takes notice to how serious climate change is. Personally, I was never interested in climate change. I was one of the ones that never really paid attention to climate change and I am finally starting to see that this is very important. I feel as though people are never going to pay attention to climate change until it is too late.

The fact that large oil companies are getting a say in policy for climate change baffles me. They are weakening the actions to help reduce climate change, which if action isn't taken now, it will only get worse. I like the statement that says "their short term profit will cause long term damages". People are so focused on the now that they aren't thinking about the long term problems.

People tend to overlook the truth about climate change and how it is negatively effecting our world. No enough action is being taken, and companies are continuing to use products that produce fossil fuels. If companies gradually deplete the use of fossil fuels and transfer to using solar panels or reusable sources, this action will have a positive impact on the world. Since the world wants to avoid reaching 1.5% by 2020, what is the most effective change that the community should make?

Climate Change is a very true and important issue that is impacting the whole world at an alarming rate. The warming in the globe of 1.5 to 2.0 degrees is a serious change that we can not allow to get higher. All the signs are present and telling us the people that we need to start to make a change now before it is to late. If people do not start to realize that our plant is not going to be able to recover if we keep doing what we are doing now.

People do not think that 1.5 or 2 degrees C is anything major. Except, when it comes to the economy the difference of a few percentage points is brought to people's attention quicker and with more enthusiasm. Just this past week over the radio, the disc jockeys brought up how there is a 6% increase in real estate. I feel like anything that has a direct impact on people, such as money, people will tend to care more. With the increase in carbon etc, people do not react as greatly because they are not informed as much. It really makes me wonder if people will start to care more if it gets announced, like the radio station, or if they will just change the channel because they do not know the horrible reality of climate change.

The idea that the world’s largest profitable oil firm can have such an impact on the COP 24 discussion and can threaten to put a halt to the entire convention if actions are threatened to be made that would inhibit the practice stood out most to me in this article. This just further reiterates the idea that “money is power” and people that are genuinely concerned about climate changes are ushered to the background, as these large corporations take the spotlight time and time again and only focus on what benefits them.

I agree with the fact that the idea of "Money is power"is very common when it comes to climate change for the reason that the countries with the most money can do the most to help fight against climate change.

The greediness of certain countries will inevitably lead to an even more rapid increse in global tempatures. The issue lays with the fact that large corporations who benefit from the use of fossil fuels get a say in what actions are taken to prevent climate change. Until countries like the United States and Saudi Arabia understand the long term damage of these selfish descions being made, there is not hope in preventing turmoil for the entire globe.

I have a question about climate change. Do you personally believe that climate change is real and poses an immediate threat to the environment and our health and safety or do you think scientists made this term up to hide the fact that this is all just Natural Cause? Maybe climate change is just a hoax and the world is cooling down and not warming up and the word of climate change is just scaring humans to stop burning coal, gas, fossil fuels, etc.

Climate change has really started to make an impacted on us these past few decades. I feel like there a lot of elderly people who tend to ignore how much this can effect us and our future. The fact that Climate change can not only effect our weather patterns but also economics is frightening. The impact that Climate change will have on us can be stopped, but people in power tend to overlook this issue.

I think it is wrong that the four fossil-fuel giants are able to threaten to block the discussions that inform them of all the harm that they are doing by burning fossil fuels to create oil. It is crucial for climate change that all of the countries in the world come to a consensus on what they can do in order to keep warning halted to 1.5°C by 2020. If action is not taken, the short term effects of climate change will turn into long term effects that will all together effect the way all of humanity lives by changing the conditions in which crops are grown, causing sea level rises, and causing there to be more endangered species. People should start to view global warming as a series issue and inform themselves of the small things they can do in their communities, like putting solar panels on their house or finding ways to reduce how much they use their cars.

I think that climate change has been becoming more and more noticeable in the last years. Climate change is effecting people's everyday lives and will continue to do so in the next decades if no solution is found. Certain countries in the UN need reach the understanding that global temperatures will continue to rise to 1.5 or 2.0c and this can cause many dangers. Dangers of the global climate change include many diseases like cancer which is difficult to cure. New policies need to be put in place to limit the disasters of climate change.

Climate change has obviously been an issue on and off for years and, people have been protesting the government to change keep it at a healthy status. Politics have been talking about it a lot too; it has become a huge deal. Although, everyone has been hearing about it, they are all wondering what anyone is doing to help the situation. Many people are making efforts to help but, not enough people in power seem to be contributing to have the change actually show.
