Thursday, November 16, 2017 is Education Day at COP23. Education is a powerful tool to combat climate change. The more educated individuals, the stronger the fight against climate change.

Recycle & Reuse

The atmosphere and culture of COP23 is a prime example. Each participant is provided a reusable water bottle that can be refilled at various water fountains. The slogan “Healthy People Tap Water” can be found on many of these bottles. By providing reusable water bottles over “570,000 disposable cups are saved”.
There are many coffee bars spread throughout the conference. There is silverware that is compostable and the to-go coffee cups are recyclable. Reusable coffee mugs are available as well. A simple solution to the high consumption of coffee and silverware.

Sustain & Reduce

The food options highlight sustainability and agricultural mindfulness. All of the cafeteria meals provide options that are 60% vegetarian food, 100% certified meat and fish, 50% organic or 20% regional. Again, highlighting eating habitats that benefit the environment and the human body. As for transportation, public transit and bicycles are available. All of the “shuttles are electric and there are over 600 bikes free of charge”.

Reading this blog, I learned that if people need to use more reusable forms of appliances that you use in your daily life. After thinking about how many waters and plates I use in a day, it shows I need to cut down and use reusable forms of appliances. I feel as if we as a country should also take steps in becoming more eco-friendly in the cars that we have driving our streets and also our eating habits.

This blog helped further my understanding that education is essential in order to reduce the risk of climate change. The use of reusable water bottles is just one example of how education can lead to vast changes in our environment. Other developments such as compostable silverware and recyclable cups have led to improvements that only became available due to educational opportunities. Incorporating these materials into our daily lives will help eliminate unnecessary waste. We as a nation must take steps to prevent negative influences on climate change, as this can drastically impact our environment. Examples of this could include improving our eating habits and using public transportation and/or bikes for travel.

After reading this blog entry, I have come to realize simple changes in our everyday life can have a significant impact on the environment. The light task of converting to a reusable water/coffee cup can lead to an immense amount of product saved. America as a whole needs to takes a step in this direction given if will better our country and honestly are not life-changing aspects that we would be changing.

Through this article I have realized that through many simple changes such as a refinement of your efficient living or a decision to change your transportation method to something a tad more environmentally friendly can have a huge impact. When many small things done by a large amount of people, this is how change begins. It isn't as difficult as many people make it seem when you want to begin to make a change. After all, it all starts with you.
